Godfather Restaurant – I’m gonna speak Italian to Mike

Posted on May 10th, 2010 by admin

(About the language and other FAQ, check the remarks at the bottom.)
Here is the famous restaurant scene with Sicilian/English subtitles as far as I understood it. I appreciate any help or corrections.
***
Q: Why does Solozzo say: “I’m gonna speak Italian to Mike”, while in fact he’s speaking Sicilian?
A: Solozzo says this to the Irish cop McCluskey who has no idea about the differences between Italian standard language and Sicilian. What we hear is more or less the dialect spoken by Americans of Sicilian and Southern Italian descent. So, it is a mix of mainly Sicilian dialect added with Napolitan and Italo-American elements.

2. Q: But Sicilian is a language, not a dialect!
A: “A language is a dialect with an army and navy.” For further details about the differences between language and dialect check the Wikipedia article.

3. Didn’t you mistranslate “”ma voggiu ca” wrong?
Yes. User MuffinMario helped me correcting one sentence. Here’s what he wrote:
valentino, great job. I think that right before Mike turns to English, instead of saying: “do you want to play” in Sicilian, he’s actually saying: “but i want that” or “ma voggiu ca” instead of “ma vu giucar”. Notice that he says in English: “what i want”

4. Q: Why did Michael drop the gun? There were fingerprints on them!
A: The gun was prepared with a special tape. No fingerprits were left. If Michael was caught with a gun, it would have been evidence. Without a gun, they’d have to let him go. So he dropped it. (Well, in fact he threw it away ;-)

5. Q: Isn’t there a bloodspot on McCluskey’s forehead before he’s finally shot?
A: Yes, a movie mistake.

6. Q: Why did you cut the bathroom scene?
A: I agree, the bathroom scene is one of the best scenes in the film and perhaps the best acting performance of Pacino. Anyway, the purpose of this clip were the Sicilian parts. I’m sure you’ll find the bathroom scene elsewhere. :-)
7. Q: I loved it when those to suckers got shot.
A: Don’t forget, this is a movie. Learn to love life, not death.

帝女花之香夭 (龍劍笙 梅雪詩) Cantonese Opera Sacrifice of a Princess

Posted on April 18th, 2010 by admin

帝女花 is a Cantonese Opera first made into a movie in 1959, starring Opera singers, Yam Kim Fei and Bak Suit Sin, both ladies, but Yam impersonated a man in all her movies. I choose to upload the 1976 version starring their pupils, Loong Kim Sang and Mui Suit See, who sing almost exactly like them because this newer version is superior in video and audio quality.
The Emperor of the Ming dynasty had just approved of his future son-in-law who won the heart of his daughter with poetry. At that moment, The Ching army attacked and took over the palace. The Emperor committed suicide with his family but Princess Cheung Ping survived. To win the favour of his subjects, the new Emperor of the Ching dynasty adopted the Princess and proceeded with the grand wedding. To show their loyalty to the Ming emperor, the newly-weds take their own lives on their wedding night. The Cantonese Opera is too beautiful to be translated. Something will be “lost in translation.” The Song here, 香夭 (Fragrant Sacrifice) is the grand finale of the opera, sung on the wedding night, the couple are dressed in exquisite finery. The Princess and her groom express their love for each other and their loyalty to the former dynasty, especially the late Emperor, before they take their own lives, drinking wine poisoned with Arsenic. (In the video subtitles, ‘cyanide’ is a mistake.)
I have added English subtitles for my friends here on youtube. Hope you will like this as much as I do. Regards, Jeremy

Posted on April 9th, 2010 by admin

I’m taking a Chinese class next semester, so I thought I’d try my hand at translating this song. Go easy on me, please! But I don’t think I’m *too* far off of a good translation. :)
